Rasa Shastra is a unique alchemical scientific approach to the preparation and administration of metals, minerals and gemstones as medicines. This almost forgotten art has a long history behind it dating from about the 3rd century in India. although there are earlier references to the use of such materials as gold, iron and copper, it appears that the addition of Parada (mercury) originates in this time period.
Today there are literally hundreds of different Rasa Shastra formula available in the literature on Indian Alchemical techniques and many of these compounds are being manufactured by individuals and large drug companies in Asia. Upon closer investigation of these formulas it can be seen that many different ingredients are often combined to deliver the powerful effects associated with Rasa medicine.
Generally Rasa medicines contain only a small amount of alchemical material, the bulk of the formula will be made up of more traditionally prepared herbal ingredients.
The herbal base of a rasa medicine can be seen as the carrier agent that delivers the full potency of its alchemical content - right to the heart of the disease.
To reach a state of purification, each Rasa material is subjected to different levels of processing to render its toxic nature safe for human consumption. Some of these procedures are relatively simplistic and quick, others are more elaborate and time consuming. The general rule is - the more toxic the material, the more involved its purification. A Rasa's level of effectiveness (its medicinal power) is mirrored only by its toxicity - if it should be incorrectly purified.
