A practicle study into the preperation and application of Rasa Medicine
With the spread of Buddhism in the Asia, at the time of Nagajuna - the great physician, alchemical master, author and tutor; surgical intervention was considered to be too invasive for the human body. Surgery began its decline in favour of internal herbal based medicine.
Herbal compounds were effective, but in cases of great chronicity, healers of the day sought a medical system which emulated the immediate effects of surgery but dispensed with its invasive procedures.
Their eventual compromise was Rasa Shastra, an alchemical fusion between mineral and organic compounds including such diverse materials as mercury, copper and diamond.
These new, highly potent formulas delivered into the hands of physicians a medicine which could be administered in very small quantities, was fast acting, tasteless, odourless and truly miraculous in its efficiency and potency.
The Art of Vedic Alchemy: takes you on a journey through the preparation of over forty different base compounds used in various Rasa formulas. Each of the eleven sections covered in this presentation are illustrated with high quality photographs and easy to follow explanations. An overview of equipment, raw materials, quantity and preparation techniques are considered in detail, along with the general applications of Rasa Medicine in India and Sri Lanka today.
All of the work in this presentation is undertaken by Andrew Mason (Dip. Ayu, H.Ir.), during a nine month research project in Sri Lanka and India. This project was initially started to gain an 'introductory' level knowledge into this fascinating science but quickly grew in complexity. Having been given the tools and production facility in which to experiment, Andrew with the help of his instructors was able to dedicate all of his time in the actual production and purification of these rasa base compounds.
