Jyotish means the science or understanding of lightt. It is the name given to the ancient art of Vedic Astrology. In Jyotish there are nine planets considered to have influence upon terrestrial matters (Earth).
The nine planets in sequence are: Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu (Moon Nodes).
Each 'Graha' or planet has a ruling Deity / God associated with it.
These in turn have their lordships (ruling signs). These Deities have physical attributes, mannerisms, personalities and friendship / enmity relationships toward each other. Learning these many associations is the key to understanding Vedic Astrology.
To help the student of Jyotish better understand and memorise the planets; images, statues and symbols are used to envoke their presence in the mind of the student , helping to create a personal relationship with each planetary lord.
